We are born with some 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections between neurons – that about 10,000 connections for each neurons (yes – you have a very busy, always busy brain!).
So what does occur as we get older?
The brain loses neurons and connections but to be more accurate – think of it as pruning. As we growth and learn, the brain begins to focus on those body and brain activities that it learns to need and lets unused neurons die off. However, it continuously strengthens existing neurons and adds dendrite connections based on most active usage.
